DordtYart Finissage Weekend

Thursday 25th – Sunday 28th of July

DordtYart is all about contemporary art and stimulating artists. Set in the monumental machine hall in Dordrecht, DordtYart calls in her final year with a theme: appear / disappear.

The ‘grande finale’ of this last year of DordtYart in Dordrecht has the motto verschijnen / verdwijnen (appear / disappear). Seventeen artists are challenged to work with this theme.

It’s still unknown what will happen to the old machine hall – a municipal monument. The future of DordtYart is also still uncertain. Founders Warnaar and Vollebregt largely finance the artwork site themselves, although they received a subsidy from the Mondriaan Fund. Warnaar: “We all do it for the love of art.” There certainly will be a new “playing field” for artists, he promises. He already has a place in mind in Rotterdam, but it is probably too small to allow visitors. But the name is retained. “DordtYart has become such a strong brand, we are not going to change that.”

DORDTYART 2019

Sound waves flow over the headland, water clatters in the harbor, materials from the storage are sorted out and arranged, a film set is built up and used live, truck belts rotate, bamboo is split, a satellite drops down..

DordtYart’s ‘grande finale’ in Dordrecht has the motto verschijnen / verdwijnen (appear / disappear). Seventeen contemporary artists are challenged to work with this theme. Fourteen of these artists work on new research and installations for five to six weeks. Together they form an active working community in which artists and technicians stimulate each other in quality, originality and the joy for art.

The interaction with you as a visitor gives the artists an extra impulse and that is why it’s an open studio to the public four days a week.

The artists in residency are: Isabelle Andriessen, Maria Blaisse & Bin Xu, Stéphane Cauchy, Driessens & Verstappen, Femke Herregraven, Susanna Inglada, J & B, Rick van Meel, Funda Gül Özcan, Sarah van Sonsbeeck and Puck Verkade. Edwin van der Heide and Barbara Visser also show work and research in a very special way and Sachi Miyachi will make a final performance.

About DordtYart

This year, one of the 365 artists will win an exhibition at the brand new Show Off gallery in Het Industriegebouw. During the launch we will announce which artist gets this opportunity. Friday November 2nd from 5PM – 8PM.

“Post Social” by Iwan Smit | Till November 18th in Studio Seine

Post Social, a solo exhibition by Iwan Smit, in which the artist presents a world after social media. In the exhibit Post Social Iwan Smit displays paintings and sculptures he created during the year in which he ended his use of social media.

“Together we are alone”

The world as we know it, has stopped existing. After an era in which sharing, following and finding have become a burden too heavy to bear, a collective sense of loneliness has awoken. The viewer is part of a post-apocalyptic landscape with survivors of the past, who are trying to take in their strange new reality. The megalomaniac metropolis of modern society has been traded in for small huts in nature, where people are shedding their condition. A catharsis has begun.

Blossom | Opening Friday November 16th

At the invitation of Bas Hendrikx, contemporary artists shed new light on developments in computer art. The opening of the exhibition ‘Blossom’ is on Friday 16 November at 8PM in Garage Rotterdam.

Artists began using algorithms in the 1960s to generate images. The results of the code and scripts resemble patterns from biology and astronomy. This created a new graphic visual language.

Algorithms and flowers appear to have unexpected similarities. In the group exhibition Blossom, contemporary artists shed new light on developments in computer art. Discover how artworks from then and now are rooted in the forms of nature.

100 YEARS OF KINETIC ART | ACTION <-> REACTION

In the exhibition Action <-> Reaction, Kunsthal Rotterdam shows the full scope of kinetic (moving) art, with works by the most famous kinetic artists in the world. This impressive overview offers the public an experience with art that appeals to different senses. Feel, see, smell, hear and experience the rhythms, flicker, vibrations, instability and force fields all the way to the cosmos! The exhibition is a reprise of the successful ‘Dynamo’ exhibition in Paris (2013), and is realized in close collaboration with Grand Palais in Paris.

The artificial light spaces in the work ‘Chromosaturation’ from 1965 by Carlos Cruz-Diez (image) immerses the visitor in an environment consisting of only three colors, so that the eye – accustomed to observing a wide range of colors – can transform the idea of color to an almost physical experience.

Rebels without a cause | Till November 25th in ZERP

From 17 October until 25 November, ZERP Galerie Rotterdam presents the group presentation ‘Rebels without a cause’, with new artworks by a.o. Anne von Freyburg, Virgilius Moldovan, Stijn Belle and Margriet Smulders (image). The artists presented are constantly pushing boundaries with their unconventional works and approach.

OCTOBER 2018

From 13 October in De Kunsthal, you can see work from Vanfleteren that look beyond the traditional surf spots of California and Hawaii.

In the exhibition ‘Surf Tribe’ the Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren (Kortrijk, 1969) reveals a culture in which he dedicates deep respect for the ocean predominates. He goes around the world looking for people who live in places where the ocean touches the country. He lays down an almost fluid community of ‘subjects of the mighty Surf Tribe’ that nature has as sole master. No action photos on azure waves in this photo series, but his serene black-and-white portraits in Vanfleteren’s pure and haunting style are must sees this month.

Have dinner at a very special location? Garage Rotterdam will transform into a unique restaurant for one evening every exhibition. This month you can enjoy a vegetarian dinner between artworks of Yael Davids, Milena Naef, Jimmy Robert and Grace Schwindt, with whom you can talk to about their work. Also, curator Sjoerd Kloosterhuis is present and will guide you through the exhibition. Chef Laurence van Bergeijk presents a matching wine arrangement with organic wines from De Gouden Ton. Guarantee yourself a seat on October 26 and make a reservation via Garage Rotterdam.

Het Nieuwe Instituut will present the work of this year’s nominees for the Prix de Rome Architecture 2018 from October 19th.

This edition focuses on two extremes in architecture: urban design and landscape design. The nominees are: Alessandra Covini / Studio Ossidiana (image), Bram van Kaathoven, Katarzyna Nowak and duo Rademacher de Vries. For the final round they are challenged to make a fictional design for the Sixhaven area in Amsterdam. A must visit, this oldest and most generous Dutch prize for architects under 35 and visual artists under 40 years!

From 13-28 October Boijmans van Beuningen presents Kunst4Kids. 26 contemporary artists have been asked to create a work of art for the kids to buy. Children can choose from drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs that have been made especially for this edition of Kunst4Kids. The exhibition is open for two weeks and only for children! The kids get a guided tour where they start with a creative workshop.

If you don’t want to miss the fun, visit the Boijmans Club every first Sunday of the month, where you and your littles ones get a tour by an art historian and discover the exhibition of Rubens. Kids also go to work themselves to become as big as an artist as Rubens. Check out the next edition this Sunday here

TENT presents a double scoop this month: the exhibition“Who do you think you are?”Initiated by Rotterdam-based singer-songwriter Sabrina Starke. It is the very first showcase of her brand new album ‘Underneath the Surface’.

Furthermore, the exhibition consists of new works by nine visual artists. Throughout the exhibition period there is a cross-disciplinary range of public programs. The many dimensions of ‘identity’ are the central theme. The goal is to provide a positive stimulus to the search for new definitions of identity. SOBA loves the feature of the ‘Head in the clouds’ installation by Mickaël Martins Afonso and Caroline Escaffre-Faure (image).
